When my friend invited me to go to the Mesa Music Festival, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’m a bit out of photography practice so I figured I’d go and bring my camera along. We walked up and down Main Street in Downtown Mesa looking for interesting things and found a few places I may bring a model in the future. Because of my work schedule, I’m pretty comfortable shooting at night but I’ve never shot bands on a stage with unpredictable lighting. My gear is due for an upgrade but I knew I could make it work and give it a try.
Here are a few photos that I took to try to get back into the swing of things after all the travel during a whirlwind October. First the 30 foot mural and a few photos of my friend in silhouette to show a model what I’m looking for in the future. We were strolling along the street and passed a few bands playing wherever they could fit. Each band we passed sounded great but it was hard to differentiate some of them. Several scraggly guys usually in flannel or black playing rock that’s not quite aggressive enough for my tastes.
The band that we ended up settling into was called Tarah Who? And I really enjoyed their music. Punk but more aggressive which is what I was looking for. Too bad we got there later in their set. I met their drummer in passing after their set was over and gave them praise. She was really nice and humble. I hope they come back to Phoenix some day. I’d go and watch them again. Safe travels to them and hope they get support as they’re starving artists doing it for the love.
I’m thinking about doing more things like this since more events come to Phoenix now that the sun isn’t melting everyone and everything. More to come. I hope you all have a good day.
